The Township flag best describes this community with the declaration that Hamburg Township is "A Great Place to Grow Up." Hamburg Township is being called one of the fastest growing townships within the fastest growing county in the State of Michigan. The Township's exponential growth over the past decade is bringing many changes to the area with preliminary decade census population estimates numbering 20,627 for the year 2000.

CENTRAL LOCATION IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN
Hamburg Township's central location between the large cities of Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit provides residents with a convenient commute to work while offering the refreshing characteristics and charm of the township when the work day is done-making Hamburg Township not only a "great place to grow," but also a great place to grow up.

NATURAL FEATURES
Hamburg Township contains more lakes than any other Township in Livingston County, with over 30 named lakes. Approximately 10 miles of the Huron River traverses the Township from east to west, connecting many of the lakes into the "Chain-of-Lakes." The River and lakes provide many water related activities, such as swimming, boating, fishing, ice skating and more.

OPEN SPACE COMMUNITIES
Despite all of the growth and change, Hamburg has worked hard to preserve the rural beauty and quality of the township. Hamburg Township has many new award-winning "open space" design residential communities that have access to the natural environment through large expanses of open space within each of the developments. The "open space" community developments have been very popular with new residents. Housing costs in Hamburg Township average $210,000. New residential development has been characterized predominantly by upper middle class to upper class housing.

RECREATION
Recreational opportunities abound in Hamburg Township. Hamburg boasts three golf facilities (Whispering Pines Golf Club, Lakeland Country Club and Rush Lake Golf Club). The Brighton State Recreation Area is located primarily in Hamburg Township, with hiking and bridle trails, a horseback riding stable, nature center, downhill and cross-country ski trails, golfing, beaches, boat launches, picnic areas, rustic and modern campgrounds. Nearby: Mount Brighton Ski Resort, Huron Meadows Metropark, Kensington Area Metropark and the Pinckney State Recreation Area.

TOWNSHIP PARKS
Located next to the Township Complex on Merrill Road are several maintained football and soccer fields utilized by local sports teams. A number of improvements are being made in West Bennett Park, such as walking trails, a boardwalk over the wetland areas to the river, a fishing dock on the Huron River, a pavilion and a playground area. Hamburg Township received an MDNR grant in the amount of $247,000 and together with a $160,000 match from Township funds, users will realize over $400,000 in park improvements over the next two years.
