The Assessing Department
Our department consists of four people: the Assessor Susan
Murray, who is certified through the state as a Level III
Assessor, Barbara D'Angelo - Level III, Donald
Burtraw - Level II, and Pam
Sudney - Level I. Barb and Don are responsible for all
new construction and the review of parcels that have transferred
ownership. They will be visiting your property if either of these
events have occurred. The staff also processes forms that are
submitted to the department such as Homestead applications, Property
Transfer Affidavits and deeds. Please feel free to contact any
of us to answer questions you may have.
PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION
The legislature for the State of Michigan has passed legislation to change the filing date and the name of what was the Homestead Exemption. This is the paperwork that a homeowner files in order to receive an 18 mill exemption from school operating taxes. It is now called Principal Residence Exemption and the filing date is May 1st. The name was changed because of confusion with the income tax homestead credit. There is no need to refile your paperwork if you are currently receiving a homestead. This affects those persons who are moving to or building new homes in the township. Your property must have been your principal residence before May 1st of the year in order for your taxes for that year to be exempt from the 18 mills.
ASSESSING DEPARTMENT PARCEL REVIEWS
The Assessing Department is in the process of reviewing all the land parcels in the township in order to update the records so they are as accurate as possible. We will be visiting each parcel to check measurements, story heights, decks, air conditioning, etc. We will leave a yellow card for the homeowner to fill out and return to the township. This card has information regarding the interior of the structure. We do not ask to inspect the interior, be we appreciate that the card is returned regarding interior information.
We began our review in Section 1. We are going through the sections numerically. You will receive a letter letting you know when we will be in your neighborhood.
The information that we gather is used not only by the Assessing Department, but also by appraisers, real estate professionals, insurance companies, and mortgage lenders.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Please call the township Assessing Department at 810-231-1000 Ext. 211 for any clarification you may need or for any questions you have.
