Putnam Township has just completed the enhancement of the 6.3 miles of the Lakelands Trail in Putnam Township.

The trail is part of the old Airline Railway, and the Great Lake-To-Lake Trail which goes from Port Huron to South Haven.

Three miles of the Trail has been paved with 7 feet of asphalt and 3 feet of fine gravel. The remainder of the trail from M-36 west to the Unadilla line will be the fine gravel surface.

The trail continues to parallel M-36 as does the Hamburg section and does so into Gregory.

The trail is maintained by Putnam Township and the Friends of the Lakelands Trail in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources.

The funding for the enhancement of the trail was provided by M-DOT and the Michigan Natural Resources Fund with matching funds from Putnam Township.

The Livingston County Road Commission oversaw the construction which was by Hoffman Brothers from Battle Creek.

The trail enhancement was done with consideration for all uses, including walkers, bicycles and equestrians, and connects the village of Pinckney with the Village of Hamburg with a paved non-motorized trail.
