Public Safety Administration

Hamburg Township Public Safety Administration

The Hamburg Township Public Safety Administration was established by a Resolution of the Hamburg Township Board of Trustees on Tuesday, September 18, 2018.  The Resolution accomplished the following:

  •  Hamburg Township Police Department and Hamburg Township Fire Department formally consolidated their administrative functions through the creation of the Hamburg Township Public Safety Administration. This type of nominal consolidation and partnership will provide administrative streamlining, combined organizational oversight and management accountability in the overall delivery of public safety services, improved coordination of services and more consistency of operations while preserving the technical expertise of the police and fire staffs.  It is a consolidation of the administrative functions of the police and fire departments under a unified command team.  It is NOT a consolidation of the police department and fire department into a single public safety department. The police department and fire department  remain two separate and distinct departments with the current operational functions of each department remaining same. It is NOT the case that a police officer (Director of Public Safety) will be running the day-to-day activities or operational functions of the fire department. That responsibility will be vested exclusively in the Fire Chief.
  • Structural Overview:  The Hamburg Township Public Safety Administration consists of the 2 executive officers from the police department, 2 executive officers from the fire department and the Public Safety Administrative Assistant Supervisor.   The Public Safety Administration is headed by a Director of Public Safety who would be responsible for and have oversight over the purely administrative functions of both the police and fire departments as well as emergency management.  The Director of Public Safety has a Deputy Director of Public Safety from the fire department (Rank: Fire Chief) and a Deputy Director of Public Safety from the police department (Rank: Deputy Chief of Police). The Director of Public Safety has responsibility for the operational functions of the police department while the Fire Chief has responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the fire department, including assuming incident command at fire scenes, and specified administrative tasks such as fire training.
  • The Fire Chief, Deputy Chief of Police and Administrative Assistant Supervisor  report directly to the Director of Public Safety. The Director of Public Safety  reports to the Township Supervisor and, ultimately, to the Township Board of Trustees.
