PEG MEDIA: ALONG THE BLACKSTONE: The cable Television series Along the Blackstone it is a collaborative effort among various nonprofit, local and state organizations, the National Park Service and a host of individuals who contribute their stories to each episode.

The National Park Service Ranger Host leads the viewer through the industrial landscape, capturing the stories, the cultures, the rich natural resources and the heritage of the birthplace of the America’s journey towards industrialization. Along the way, we meet the people of the Valley as they tell their story in their own words.

The story of the mill villages first established here in the Blackstone Valley is a national story of industrialization for the mill village model can be found throughout the country and it is a story that all can relate to. This partnership with the people of the Blackstone Valley is reflected in the stories told and the awards won including 10 regional awards, a 1996 Telly Award, a 1997 Communicator Award of Distinction, the National Association of Interpretation’s 1998 Media Award, a 1999 Communicator Award of Excellence, and the National Park Service Freedom Star Award 2002. The A&E Network:The History Channel selected 21 episodes to air as part of their American History Showcase series.

The added benefit of the television series is that the mission of the National Park Service to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations” is presented using real life examples that are readily available for all to enjoy. The series showcases partners working together to preserve the rich and diverse heritage found here in the Blackstone Valley, the beginning of America’s Industrial journey, but throughout communities in America. *VISION-THE ART OF DOING: The group of men and their families who started America’s journey towards industrialization were problem solvers. Creating new tools to build new machinery to spin cotton required an inventive mind, a knowledge of metal working, and a set of skills to make it a reality. These were folks who saw a problem as an opportunity. Join us as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #54 illustrates how visionaries and real doers came to make the Blackstone Valley and America the hub of the manufacturing universe. *BIKE, HIKE & CANOE THE BLACKSTONE: The Blackstone Valley, while know for its history and its historic landscape ranging from Mill Villages to the Blackstone Canal, it is also known for its great recreational opportunities – hiking, biking and canoeing/kayaking throughout the Blackstone Valley has become a major interest for many families. So join us as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #22 shows us where great recreational opportunities are going on as well as what the future will be, such as a 45 mile bikeway connecting Providence to Worcester and to the 25 mile East Bay Bikeway. Lots to do and see, so let’s get moving. *STORIES FROM AMERICA'S NATIONAL PARKS: Most Americans don’t realize just how extensive their National Park System really is for as of 2010 there are over 393 National Parks, Monuments, Battlefields, Historic Sites, Scenic & Recreational Rivers and National Seashores. This number does not include National Heritage Areas, Wild & Scenic Rivers, National Trail Systems and other Affiliated Areas. Our National Park System is huge. The question is what connects all these sites, these stories together? The answer is that they are all make up America’s Story. So Along the Blackstone’s Episode #69 is really the pilot episode of (hopefully) a national television series on America’s National Parks. The goal is to thematically connect America’s National Parks – the big ones and the small ones, the well known ones and the obscure ones. This episode “What Would You Do for Freedom?” starts at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell as we begin our journey looking at what American’s did for their freedom at different stages of our nation’s development. We visit Minute Man National Park in Concord, MA to learn what the Minute Men did for their freedom, then moved on to Boston to see what the free African American neighborhood on the backside of Beacon Hill in downtown Boston did for their freedom and finally head down to New York Harbor to visit Ellis Island to learn what immigrants coming from around the world to the United States were willing to do for their freedom. It is a great journey and one many of you can relate to and it provides you with a great sense of just how wonderful our National Parks really are and the different stories they tell, so join us. *A SOLDIER'S CAMP LIFE - CIVIL WAR PT 2: As we approach the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, stop for a moment and consider what the daily camp life of a soldier during the Civil War must have been like. In a war where the technology was changing rapidly, but the tactics remained as they were during the Napoleonic era, a soldier’s life was hard. How did they pass their time? How did they avoid disease, the prime killer of soldiers from both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line? How was technology changing the tactics of war? And how do you care for the wounded – from a Surgeon’s perspective? These and other questions are answered in Along the Blackstone’s Episode #14 with the help of Civil War Re-enactors from Battery “B”, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery Regiment and members from the 22nd,the 28th & 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiments. Enjoy the period music performed by PENDRAGON of Cumberland, RI
