Police: Hamburg robbery suspect may have hit elsewhere

By Lisa Roose-Church • DAILY PRESS & ARGUS • January 12, 2010

Thanks to tips from the public, police have identified the man they say is responsible for robbing a Hamburg Township gas station while armed with a Taser.

A warrant was signed Monday morning for John Cornell Tynan, 25, of Hamburg Township, charging him with armed robbery and possession of a Taser.

Oakland County sheriff's deputies are also investigating whether Tynan is responsible for the New Year's Day armed robbery of the Mobil gas station on Grand River Avenue in Lyon Township, Undersheriff Michael McCabe said.

Police are now searching for the man, who is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 160 pounds. He has short black hair and brown eyes.

Tynan was last seen driving an older-model gold, four-door sedan, possible an Oldsmobile Aurora or similar model. He may have a recent injury to his face from an altercation during the Hamburg robbery.

"We're glad; because of the media broadcasting the (police) drawing, we were able to get him identified, and we hope to get him into custody," Hamburg Police Chief Steve Luciano said Monday.

Police said the bandit tried to pocket an undisclosed sum of money shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday at the Marathon gas station at 7260 E. M-36, but was stopped by an alert clerk.

The clerk was cleaning the station when he saw the man enter, walk behind the counter and begin taking money, police said.

The clerk confronted the man, prompting the bandit to brandish a stun gun from his pocket. The clerk began throwing merchandise at him, police said.

A fight ensued as the man tried to leave, police said. The clerk disarmed the robber, striking him multiple times, and cutting him above the left eye.

Police said the shirt tied over the robber's face came off during the scuffle.

The man fled to a nearby vehicle, but he'd lost his stun gun, glasses and most of the money he'd grabbed, police said.

In the Lyon Township incident, the man was armed with a gun and stun gun when he entered the gas station at 60999 Grand River Ave. at about 12:25 a.m. New Year's Day.

The man walked around the counter and pointed a black semiautomatic handgun at a female clerk's head. The clerk said she also saw a black stun gun in the robber's left hand.

The woman said he ordered her to give him money, and when she complied, he left the store while grabbing a package of cigarettes.

The description of the man in that incident is similar to the one in the Hamburg Township gas station robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hamburg Township Police Department at (810) 231-9391.
