A "Labor of Love" To
Benefit Those In Need Locally
2/14/11
- During these tough times, most everyone could use a helping hand and that’s
the idea behind Labor of Love’s annual project day coming up in April.
Labor of Love originated at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church and is now
affiliated with Love INC. Founder and Chairperson Allan Lutes tells WHMI that
they’ll help people with financial challenges, the elderly or those with
disabilities maintain or repair their homes. The group is now also providing
help to the families of people serving in the US military that are deployed
out of the country or state. Lutes tells WHMI that projects vary every year
based on need and the economy has been pretty dismal, hitting hard in Livingston
County. Lutes says the average project costs between $800 and $1200 dollars
as they build several accessible ramps, do painting, siding and roof repairs.
However, he says there are a number of ways to get involved outside of a hammer
and nails. There’s a youth “rake and run” program to help
with spring yard clean-up and a “clean team” helps the elderly
and disabled with interior spring cleaning. In addition to volunteers for the
April 30th event, the group is in need of local residents with projects. More
information about volunteering or nominations can be found through the link
