- A road map for charting a positive future in Livingston County was unveiled
at an event Wednesday that brought out 300 people to Crystal Gardens in Genoa
Township. Called “Advantage Livingston”, the plan was crafted after
a year’s worth of work by three Livingston County chambers of commerce
and various volunteer workshop groups. It sets forth a series of goals, both
short and long-term, that would hopefully be achieved through five broad strategies;
producing a globally competent workforce, enhancing the area’s quality
of life, properly marketing the county, nurturing an entrepreneurial culture
and increase collaboration and cooperation between community entities. Some
of the ideas proposed in the plan include a centralized chamber of commerce,
while expanding the consolidation of school and governmental services. It also
calls for eventually moving to a county executive form of government like that
seen in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, in which executive and legislative
duties would be split between a county executive and the board of commissioners.
The guest speaker at the event was Bill Rustem (pictured), Chief Strategist
for Governor Rick Snyder and former chief executive officer of Public Sector
Consultants. Rustem spoke with WHMI after his speech, and says from the number
of people who turned out at the event, and the energy displayed by those present,
the county has a bright economic future. Also speaking to the large crowd were
the directors of the Brighton, Howell and Hartland chambers of commerce, Livingston
County Board of Commissioners Chair Maggie Jones, Barbara Barden of the Convention
and Visitors Bureau and a number of other area officials. At the conclusion
of the event, attendees signed up to be on one of the five volunteer work groups
that will be meeting to put the strategy for the future of Livingston County
into action. The plan can be viewed through the link below. (TT/JK)
