Lakeland Trail Clean-Up To Be Held This Saturday

News Photo 4/14/11 - The 2nd annual Lakeland Trail clean-up will take place this weekend and local residents are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and lend a helping hand. The clean-up is being organized by Girl Scout Troop 40275 which consists of 34 junior and cadet level girls in the Pinckney, Lakeland and Hamburg service area. Some are working on their bronze award, the highest a junior can earn. Troop Co-Leader Linda Shultes says it allows the girls to discover their skills and connect with others to take action while making a difference in the world around them. She says every one of the girls uses the trail and this project allows them to see firsthand how they impact the community. Shultes says they were able to collect and haul away three truckloads of trash last year, including a lot of tires and a stove that was dumped on the side of the trail. However, she says in walking the trail recently, she has not noticed any tires or appliances so the majority of what needs to be cleaned up is trash such as coffee cups, bottle and cans. The clean-up will take place this Saturday from 10am until 3pm and interested individuals are asked to come to one of the three trail heads located at Merrill Road by Bennett Field; Pettysville Road and M-36 or at the Train Depot on D-19 in Pinckney. Those attending will be greeted by girl scouts who will hand out gloves and various bags and they can walk along any direction of the trail and pick up trash. There will be signs marking the halfway point between the trailheads so people can decide whether to keep going or turn around. It’s about 2.5 miles between them and plans are also in the works to secure a transportation shuttle. Shultes adds that since girl scouts are always prepared, the clean-up will be held rain or shine.
