Grandparent Scam-IMPORTANT!!!    - PLEASE  READ!!!

The scam going around targets the senior population and its very effective.  The grandparent receives a frantic call from someone they believe to be their grandchild.  The supposed grandchild sounds   distressed and may be calling from a noisy location.  They claim to be involved in a car accident or having been arrested or need emergency car repairs and ask the grandparent to wire money to post bail or pay for medical treatment or car repairs.  They typically ask for several thousand dollars and may even call back several hours or days later asking for more money. They claim to be too           embarrassed to tell their parents and want it kept secret.  There may even be 2 callers with one of them claiming to be  some type of law enforcement officer who explains what type of fines need to be paid.  The scammer may pretend to be a neighbor or family friend and need you to wire money through Western Union or MoneyGram or to provide bank account routing numbers.  Wire transfers of money are nearly impossible to trace and typically cannot be recovered from the telephone       con-artists.
How to Avoid Being Scammed:       Be suspicious when you receive a telephone call where:

♦  a grandchild calls you from a far away location

♦  the grandchild says, “It’s me,” or “It’s your grandson.” or “It’s your favorite grandchild.”

♦  the grandchild is in some trouble or some type of distress

♦  the caller asks for money to be wire transferred

If you receive such a call, you should verify the identity and location of the grandchild claiming to be in trouble.  You should hang up and call another family member who can confirm your grandchild’s whereabouts.  Try calling your grandchild at the telephone number through which you normally reach him or her.  Stay calm and avoid acting out of a sense of urgency.  Do not wire money unless you have verified with an independent third party that your grandchild is truly in trouble.  In addition, never give out any personal identifying information such as bank account or credit card numbers to anyone who calls you on the phone.    For more information, see me in the office or read more on-line at http://www.mich.gov/ag  and look under Consumer Alerts or toll-free at   1-877-765-8388.

Jean Chiado

Volunteer of the Month

This month’s volunteer of the month is Jean Chiado.  Jean helps with the Holiday Bazaar, sets up and cleans up for the Kiwanis lunch and at the Community Garage Sale.  She is like the       energizer bunny!! Jean likes to play pinochle and loves to go on the gambling trips.  Jean is one of our “resident” nurses who is always willing to help with any first aid or medical questions.  Jean was widowed after being married to John for 40 years and has 2 daughters, 1 son, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  Before “retiring” Jean was a registered nurse in hospitals and doctor’s offices.  Jean continues to work in the medical field as a Medical Data Specialist and as a caregiver.
